Mystics Faced Playoff Elimination With Plenty To Build On For Next Season

The Washington Mystics’ playoff run came to an end Wednesday night, as the Atlanta Dream defeated Washington 93-75 at CareFirst Arena to complete a 2-0 sweep in the first round of the WNBA playoffs.
On the brink of elimination after a 92-77 loss to Atlanta in game one, the Mystics returned home with one final opportunity to extend their postseason run.
Washington remained within striking distance for much of the night and trimmed Atlanta’s lead to just three points early in the fourth quarter. But the Mystics couldn't hold on to their momentum to turn the game around. Atlanta answered with a late surge to pull away, with guard Jordin Canada scoring seven consecutive points to add to Atlanta's 13-0 run.
The Dream’s defense also created problems throughout the game for Washington's offense, forcing 19 turnovers and recording 10 steals.
Guard Sonia Citron led Washington with a game-high 25 points, while forward Kiki Iriafen chipped in a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds to close out the night.
Atlanta was led by guard Allisha Gray, who finished with 22 points. Guard Allisha Gray also chipped in 19 points and 11 assist to the Dream's dominant effort. The loss brought an end to a season that represented a significant turnaround for the Mystics.
Entering the year with the youngest roster in the league and a focus on rebuilding and developing a young core, Washington transformed those expectations into a franchise-record of 28 wins and its first playoff appearance since 2023.
Head coach Sydney Johnson described the season as a “magical ride,” pointing to the culture established within the team as a major factor behind its success. Although Washington’s postseason ended sooner than the team expected, the season marked a notable step forward for a franchise that entered the year focused on growth.
The Mystics now head into the offseason with the foundation of a team that has experienced winning, reached the playoffs, and established a culture they believe can continue to shape the franchise moving forward.
