Howard Volleyball Falls 3-0 To Georgetown, A Look Ahead To George Washington

Howard University volleyball dropped their third consecutive match Thursday night, falling 3-0 (26-24, 25-11, 25-19) to district rival, Georgetown University's Lady Hoyas at Burr Gymnasium. The loss moved the Bison to 1-9 on the season, marking just one match victory through their first 10 contests.

The Howard Lady Bison came close to taking the opening set, rallying from a 23-20 deficit to even the score at 24-24 before the Georgetown Lady Hoyas claimed the final two points. The Lady Hoyas carried that momentum into the second set, going on an 8-1 run to take a 14-6 lead and eventually finish the frame, 25-11.

Howard mounted a stronger challenge in the third set, stringing together five points to cut Georgetown's lead 11-10. The Lady Hoyas countered down the stretch, scoring the final three points to complete the 3-0 sweep.

Freshman outside hitter Addison Buckner led the Lady Bison with 12 kills on 34 attacks, while senior middle blocker Zenai Jethroe recorded five kills. Sophomore setter Alexys James added five kills, 16 assists, five digs, one aces, two blocks in the effort.

Howard will remain in the District for this weekend's contest. The Lady Bison are set to travel across town on Saturday, Sept. 19 to take on the Georgetown Washington University Revolutionaries at the Charles E. Smith Center.

The Lady Bison hold a 5-3 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 2017. Howard secured a 3-2 match victory last season, which marked the most recent meeting between the two programs. The Lady Bison's largest victory over the Lady Revolutionaries came in a 3-0 sweep in 2021.

George Washington is currently 4-6 on the season, coming off a 1-3 loss to the University of Virginia. The Lady Revolutionaries will also be entering Saturday's match on the second day of back-to-back play after facing Georgetown in a Friday night District thriller. Meanwhile, the Lady Bison will look to bounce back as they prepare for their final match before entering MEAC conference play.

Saturday's match will take place at 6:30pm and will air on ESPN+.
