DMV Football Preview: College Week 3 And High School Action

College and high school football is taking shape across the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area. College football enters week three this weekend, while high school football teams take the field under the Friday night lights.

From crucial early-season tests to thrilling conference or local matchups, there is plenty for DMV football fans to be excited about as the region takes the field.

Here's everything you need to know about Week 3 of DMV college football and this week's WINsports High School football coverage:

UMD Terrapins Set To Host Virginia Tech Hokies Before Expected Sellout Crowd

The Maryland Terrapins return home to SECU Stadium for their biggest test of the young season Saturday night. The Terrapins will welcome the Virginia Tech Hokies for a week three matchup between two unbeaten teams. The matchup under the lights of SECU Stadium is expected to draw a sellout crowd of over 43,000 fans.

Maryland enters this matchup at 2-0 after opening the season with a dominant 62-0 shutout over the Hampton Pirates, followed by a 38-14 victory on the road against the UConn Huskies last weekend. With both wins, the Terrapins have extended their nation-leading non-conference winning streak to 20 games.

Quarterback Malik Washington powered Maryland's offense against the Huskies throwing 347 yards while completing 34 of 41 passes. His performance included a program-record 18 consecutive completions, while targets Na'eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding and Chris Durr Jr. each surpassed 100 receiving yards. Maryland also added 125 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

The Terrapins' defense has been equally impressive through two games. Maryland has only allowed just 14 points so far this season and held Connecticut to 156 passing yards. This marked the Terrapins' 18th consecutive opponent that was limited to less than 300 passing yards.

Virginia Tech enters this matchup also unbeaten at 2-0. The Hokies opened the season with strong home victories over the VMI Keydets and the Old Dominion Monarchs. But Saturday, represents a significant rise in competition as they take their first road trip against a Power Four team.

This meeting also renews the competitive familiarity between the two programs, adding another layer to Saturday's contest. With both teams entering the game unbeaten, it provides an early opportunity against stronger competition.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at SECU Stadium in College Park, Maryland. The game will air on Fox Sports 1 (FS1) and Maryland Sports Radio Network.

Morgan State Bears Take On Towson Tigers In Baltimore Football Showdown

The Morgan State Bears will head across town on Saturday, Sept. 19, to take on the Towson Tigers in "The Battle For Greater Baltimore". The Bears enter the matchup sitting 2-1 after shutting out Virginia University of Lynchburg at home, while the Tigers are searching for their first win on the season after falling 45-9 on the road against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Saturday's matchup will mark the 31st meeting between the two programs, with Towson holding a 26-4 advantage in the all-time series. The Tigers have also won the last eight matchups, including a 27-22 over the Morgan State Bears last season at Hughes Stadium.

The last time the two teams met at Johnny Unitas Stadium came on Sept. 6, 2024, when Towson secured a 14-9 victory. Morgan State will look to snap its eight-game losing streak in the series and earn its first win over the Tigers since 2009.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Maryland. The game will air on Monumental Sports Network and Flo Football.

Georgetown Hoyas Set For First Road Opponent

The Georgetown Hoyas are set to take on the Richmond Spiders on Saturday, Sept. 19, for their first road game of the season. The Hoyas return from a bye week looking to bounce back from their 45-14 loss to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Sept. 5. That loss left Georgetown at 0-1 entering this week's matchup and looking for secure their first win on the season.

Richmond enter this matchup at 2-1 after splitting their last two games. The Spiders traveled to Washington, D.C., in their second game of the season and defeated the Howard Bison, 28-21, at Greene Stadium before suffering a 73-0 road loss to the North Carolina State Wolfpack last week. The Spiders now return to the Nation's Capital region for another matchup in D.C., but this time against a Patriot League opponent.

Saturday marks the 10th meeting between the two programs, with the series dating back to 1894. The Hoyas lead the all-time series 5-4 and are 3-2 against the Spiders on the road. Richmond won the most recent meeting, 31-24, at Cooper Field in 2025.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. The game will air on ESPN+ and Monumental Sports Network.

A Battle of The Bulldogs: Bowie State Faces Alabama A&M In Road Test

The Bowie State Bulldogs remain on the road for week three, as they take on the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Louis Crews Stadium. The Bulldogs enter week three 0-2 after opening the season with losses to the Virginia State Trojans and the Delaware State Hornets.

Despite the losses, the Bowie State showed signs of progress against the Hornets, totaling 287 yards of offense and converting 7-of-14 third-down opportunities. Saturday marks the third consecutive road matchup against a FCS opponent for team and the first-year head coach Dawson Odums.

Alabama A&M enters this matchup at 2-1 after a dominant 30-3 victory over the Tennessee State Tigers last week. Quarterback Cornelious Brown IV led the way with 326 passing yards and three touchdowns, while wide receiver Jarel Williams added 175 receiveing yards a touchdown. The Bulldogs of Alabama A&M have now won two consecutive game after their 31-24 season opening loss to the Howard Bison.

For Bowie State, Saturday presents another opportunity to gain valuable experience against a FCS opponent, as the Bulldogs continues their early competitive stretch on the road.

WINsports High School Preview: Gonzaga Eagles vs Archbishop Caroll Lions

The WINsports team brings you a Washington Catholic Athletic Association (WCAC) matchup Friday night, as the Gonzaga Eagles host the Archbishop Carroll Lions at Buchanan Field in Washington, D.C.

Gonzaga enters the matchup ranked No.2 in D.C. and No. 1 in the WCAC's Capital Division. The Eagles are off to a dominant 3-0 start after opening the season with victories over Calvert Hall of Baltimore, Coolidge, and Eastern of D.C. The Eagles will look to extend their win streak to four games.

Archbishop Carroll enters Friday's matchup at 1-1, ranked No. 7 in D.C. and No. 2 in the WCAC's Metro Division behind Bishop O'Connell. The Lions opened the season with a 24-6 loss to Friendship Collegiate before bouncing back with a victory over KIPP DC Legacy Prep.

While Friday's game marks the first WCAC matchup of the season for both teams, it sets the stage for an early-season conference test in the nation's capital.
