Just hours after Washington's latest injury report suggested the team could have a relatively healthy roster for its primetime showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Commanders have suffered another significant setback. The latest blow comes on the defensive side of the ball, with less than 48 hours remaining before Sunday Night Football.

Veteran defensive tackle Daron Payne is now expected to miss the remainder of the 2026 season after sustaining a significant foot injury during Friday's practice. Further medical examinations could ultimately lead to Washington placing him on injured reserve following Sunday's NFC East matchup.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Payne could potentially have already played his final snap of the season. The Commanders have since officially downgraded the veteran defensive lineman from questionable to out ahead of their primetime meeting with Philadelphia.

Payne's Injury Delivers Major Blow to Commanders Ahead of Primetime Clash

The timing of Payne's injury is particularly unfortunate, especially considering that the veteran defensive tackle had participated fully in every practice throughout the week. The 29-year-old has recorded seven tackles and one sack during an inconsistent 2026 campaign, which marks his eighth season in Washington.

Payne has faced scrutiny earlier in the season following questions about his effort on several plays during the opening weeks. However, he managed to produce an important moment against the New York Giants, forcing a fumble on running back Cam Skattebo in overtime. The play stands out as one of his most significant contributions through Washington's first six games.

The veteran defensive tackle entered the 2026 campaign in a contract year for the second time during his tenure in Washington. His latest injury adds further uncertainty to his future in the franchise as the organization evaluates its long-term plans for the defensive line.

Throughout his eight seasons with Washington, Payne has accumulated 446 total tackles, 38 sacks, eight forced fumbles, and one interception. Notably, 16 of those sacks came during the 2021 and 2022 regular seasons.

However, his overall production has experienced a decline over the past four campaigns, fueling questions about his consistency and long-term value to the organization.

Payne's expected absence creates another significant problem for an already injury prone defensive line in Washington. He becomes the second defensive tackle expected to miss at least week eight, joining fellow veteran tackle Javon Kinlaw, who was previously ruled out of Sunday's matchup.

With both experienced defensive linemen unavailable, the potential season debut of Jer'Zhan Newton becomes increasingly important. Newton was one of four Washington players listed as questionable on the team's final injury report, and his availability could have a considerable impact on how the Commanders’ approach their defensive line rotation.

Washington must now figure out how to compensate for the simultaneous losses of Payne and Kinlaw in the trenches as it prepares to face an Eagles offense dealing with injury concerns of its own.

The latest development represents yet another frustrating chapter in Washington's ongoing battle with injuries. The Commanders have been without left tackle Laremy Tunsil (triceps) throughout the season and lost wide receiver Terry McLaurin (torn patellar tendon) for the remainder of the year in week six.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels has also missed two and a half games with a dislocated elbow, while guard Sam Cosmi, wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt (on injured/reserve currently), have all missed some time already this season.

Additionally, linebacker Leo Chenal and return specialist Jaylin Lane have been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Sunday's contest represents the second and final regular-season meeting between the NFC East rivals. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET at Northwest Stadium, where the Commanders will attempt to overcome another significant personnel setback in a crucial Week 8 divisional matchup.

Payne's Injury Crushes Trade Opportunities For Washington

The veteran defensive tackle had emerged as a potential trade candidate earlier in the week, with several teams reportedly monitoring his availability ahead of the November 10, 2026, NFL trade deadline. However, his recent foot injury, which is expected to sideline him for the remainder of the season, has effectively ended those discussions. With a potential placement on injured reserve looming, Washington has lost the opportunity to explore a trade involving one of its most experienced defensive players before the deadline.

The Commanders had reason to consider their options with Payne, particularly given his contract situation. The 29-year-old is scheduled to become a free agent in 2027 and carries a $16.4 million base salary for the 2026 season. His upcoming free agency and salary commitments were reportedly among the factors that made him a potential trade candidate as Washington evaluates their long-term roster plans.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Payne still offered considerable value on the trade market. His experience as an interior defensive lineman, combined with his ability to contribute against both the run and pass game, made him an intriguing option for teams seeking help along their defensive front.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Giants had reportedly emerged as potential landing spots. League discussions suggested that both Jacksonville and New York could benefit from adding a versatile interior defender with pass-rushing ability.

ESPN also listed Payne as a potential trade candidate in a recent report. The outlet's analytics model gave Washington a 25 percent probability of moving on from one of its top defensive contributors. His contract situation and the organization's long-term roster considerations were among the factors behind that assessment.

However, Washington also had reasons to keep the veteran defensive tackle. Despite the Commanders' disappointing 1-4-1 record, the NFC East remained within reach, potentially making a midseason departure less appealing. The franchise had also made significant changes to its defensive personnel ahead of the trade deadline three years earlier, making Payne's situation another important roster decision.

His durability and production further complicated the possibility of moving on from him. Payne had missed just three games throughout his nine-year NFL career and appeared in every contest for Washington this season before suffering his latest injury. Throughout the season, he recorded one sack and ranked third on the team in tackles for loss, trailing behind K'Lavon Chaisson and Odafe Oweh.

Although his statistical production has declined compared to previous seasons, Payne remained an experienced presence along a defensive front that has struggled with injuries.

Ultimately, Payne's injury has changed the Commanders' trade deadline outlook considerably. What could have been an opportunity to acquire future draft capital or other assets has instead become another personnel setback.

Washington must now turn its attention toward managing his absence and finding ways to maintain stability along its defensive line as the season progresses.
