The NFL preseason is officially over and the Washington Commanders are finalizing their initial 53-man roster for the 2026 season. The Commanders initially began making their roster cuts on Saturday, following the team's 41-3 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Friday Night. But the team made their final roster cut downs at 6:00p.m. ET.
Washington's roster consisted of 91 players headed into the cutdown weekend with several injured players occupying some of those spots. That group includes left tackle Laremy Tunsil (torn triceps) and defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton (torn pectoral muscle). Once the Commanders finalize their initial roster, both players will move to the injured/reserved (IR) list without an official return designation. Meanwhile, defensive end Dorance Armstrong's suspension for week one, will not count him towards the initial 53-man roster.
In the meantime, the Commanders placed cornerback Trey Amos and running back Jeremy McNichols on their Injured/Reserved list with designation to return sometime this season. Last season, Amos suffered a fractured fibula which also caused him to miss Washington's entire offseason program ahead of training camp. He then dealt with soft tissue soreness early in training camp and was cleared to practice until Mid-August.
In his second practice back during training camp, Amos suffered an ankle sprain that once again put him back on the sideline. With Amos starting the season off on the IR list, he has the opportunity to rehab and recover without occupying an active roster spot. Although, his injury isn't ideal at all for Washington given the versatile void that Amos fills in the backfield.
McNichols on the other hand suffered a quadriceps injury early in training camp and has yet to make a return. Despite the concern of his injury, Washington knew the impact McNichols has had on this team as a dependable third-down running back and strong pass protector, making his roster spot a clear decision.
Deatrich Wise Jr. has also been placed on the team's Physically Unable To Perform/Reserve List. Wise has been out all of training camp while recovering with torn triceps suffered in training camp.
