AJ Dybantsa Will Miss Wizards' Season Opener Against Bucks With Ankle Injury

Washington Wizards’ rookie AJ Dybantsa will miss Wednesday’s season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks, due to a left ankle sprain. Head coach Brian Keefe confirmed the news to reporters Tuesday afternoon.
Dybantsa suffered the injury during Friday’s preseason finale against the New Orleans Pelicans after landing awkwardly on his left ankle, following a shot attempt. He limped to the locker room for further evaluation and did not return to the game.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft remains day-to-day, after being limited in Tuesday’s practice. Dybantsa participated in shooting drills Monday before returning to practice Tuesday. His involvement in both sessions is an encouraging sign as he recovers from the ankle sprain.
The Wizards are taking a cautious approach with their prized rookie as he recovers. Dybantsa could make his NBA debut on Friday when Washington hosts the Toronto Raptors.
In his absence, Tre Johnson, Bilal Coulibaly and Will Riley could see increased playing minutes in Wednesday’s season opener.
The Washington Wizards season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks is set for Wednesday, Oct. 21. Tip-off is set for 7p.m. EDT.
